Merdeka Curriculum: Is Indonesia Ready for Student-Led Learning?
The Merdeka Curriculum is a big change for Indonesia's education system. It's very different from the previous 2013 curriculum, which was very strict and taught a lot of information. Its aim is to create a more flexible, student-centered learning environment emphasizing critical thinking, character development, and practical competencies rather than memorized information.
This new curriculum gives schools and teachers more flexibility. Educators can adapt learning materials and methods to their students' needs and the local context, creating more meaningful learning experiences. It also emphasizes comprehensive growth through the P5 project-based learning initiative that integrates ethical values, teamwork, and real-world problem-solving. This approach cultivates well-rounded individuals who are proficient and responsible.
However, the Merdeka Curriculum has some difficulties. Teacher readiness is the biggest challenge. The curriculum is flexible and creative, but teachers, especially in rural or under-resourced areas, may lack the training to implement these new methods. Whether the curriculum is successful depends a lot on the teachers and schools. This can cause a big difference in the quality of education between schools in cities that have more money and schools in areas that are farther away. Also, the education officials change the national curriculum a lot. This can make teachers and parents feel tired of the curriculum. They may feel like the education system is always changing and that it is not stable. There is also a concern about the potential lack of continuity between different educational levels. For example, science and social studies are initially integrated in elementary school, but then they are separated again in high school.
The Merdeka Curriculum is a good change to modernize Indonesia's education system and fix the problems of older models. But it will only work in the long term if teachers are well-trained, resources are shared fairly, and the rules are followed.
